About Andy Bliss
Hi, I’m Andy.
My creative life has always lived at the intersection of rhythm and technology. I started piano lessons at age five and picked up the drums at ten, but even before that, I was fascinated by the family’s Apple IIe glowing in my Dad’s office, complete with floppy discs.
By high school, those two worlds were fully intertwined. I spent hours behind a drum set, and just as many tinkering with gear — my Palm Pilot, a MiniDisc recorder (both portable and component), and a full stereo system I pieced together one upgrade at a time. Every paycheck from my part-time jobs went toward new speakers for my car or better monitors for my room.
I still remember walking into work the day Windows ’98 dropped — the buzz in the computer department at Best Buy felt like a cultural event. I started out helping families choose their first home computers and eventually moved into the Media Department, surrounded by CDs, stereos, and every piece of gear that connected music to technology.
When I wasn’t working, I was a self-declared CD connoisseur, spending hours digging through used CD shop bins or meticulously transcribing Dave Matthews and Phish grooves. I’m still as baffled — and inspired — by Carter Beauford today as I was in 1996.
That lifelong overlap between drums and technology still drives everything I do. Whether I’m composing for percussion and electronics, building hybrid drum setups in Ableton Live, experimenting with triggers and sensors, or writing about the creative process itself — I’ve never stopped trying to make the analog and digital dance together.
🖥️ The Site
I’ve been publishing online since 2002, when this website first lived on Apple’s iWeb. Back then, it was a simple collection of performance updates and a few blog posts — a digital notebook built with Apple’s drag-and-drop templates.
Over time, that early experiment evolved into a full creative platform that now houses everything I do: performances, writing, teaching, projects, and courses. The name has changed, the tools have changed, and the focus has sharpened — but the idea remains the same: to document the creative process, share what I’m learning, and connect with anyone who loves the space where music and technology meet.
Today, AndyBlissMusic.com serves as my home base for projects like glitch (my forthcoming solo album), the Bliss Field Guides, the Sonic Sketchbook journal, and the Bliss Creative Labs community — all built around that same spirit of curiosity that started with an Apple IIe and a set of drumsticks.
📍Where to Start
If you’re new here, I’d love to show you around and point out a few resources you may find helpful.
🥁 Performance Projects
Original shows, compositions, and collaborations that merge acoustic percussion and electronic sound — including glitch, my upcoming solo album and touring program.
📓 Sonic Sketchbook
My ongoing creative journal — a space where I share from-the-workbench reflections on drumming, composition, and creative technology. Posts range from Ableton and Dorico workflows to practice concepts, sound experiments, and the occasional philosophical deep dive into the creative process.
