Focus Day 2016
PASIC · Artistic Director · November 2016
Every year the Percussive Arts Society International Convention gives one full day to a single idea. In 2016 the idea was the European avant-garde, and I was the artistic director for it.
The premise was simple and, in an American percussion context, slightly confrontational: a body of repertoire that had been shaping European playing for decades was almost unknown on convention stages here. Not because it is difficult, though some of it is, but because nobody had put it in front of this audience at scale and in one sitting.
I wrote the framing essay for Percussive Notes the same year, which is the closest thing to a full account of what the day was trying to do and why those pieces.
Program, photographs, and the full essay to be added.
