Four Thousand Holes

The Friday concert of Big Ears 2016 with the Nief-Norf Project: John Luther Adams’ Four Thousand Holes, Alvin Lucier’s Nothing is Real, and Elliot Cole’s Postludes. I directed and played.
Four Thousand Holes is chamber-scale Adams — piano, percussion, and electronic aura — and it asks for the same thing his enormous pieces do, which is that you stop trying to shape the sound and let it sit in the room at its own length.
Lucier’s piece puts a small speaker inside a teapot. It is funny for about thirty seconds and then it is not funny at all.
