Winning IPEC
PASIC · Indianapolis · November 2018
The University of Tennessee Percussion Ensemble won the International Percussion Ensemble Competition and played the showcase concert at PASIC 2018. Baylor placed second, Indiana third. The year before, the winners had been Eastman, Northwestern, and Michigan State.
We played the entire program from memory. That was the decision the whole year turned on, and it is not a stunt: once nobody is reading, the ensemble stops being six people executing a part and starts being one instrument. It also means every piece has to be learned twice over, which is why the program stayed small and went deep.
The concert held two works by Aurél Holló, a John Psathas piece with solo piano, Annika Socolofsky, Xenakis, and a premiere by Evan Chapman.
Exact titles, the pianist, photographs and video to be added.
