Panorama is the largest steelband event in the world outside Trinidad and Tobago, where the instrument comes from. Crossfire draws players from Trinidad and Tobago, the wider West Indies, and across the United States.
It is worth saying why a contemporary classical percussionist ends up in a Brooklyn panyard in the late summer. The answer is that the pan is a serious instrument with a repertoire and a technique and a competitive culture, and standing in the middle of a hundred of them teaches you things about ensemble and about volume that no chamber piece will.
