Spices, Perfumes, Toxins!

Avner Dorman  ·  Knoxville Symphony  ·  November 2019

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra

Avner Dorman’s double concerto for two percussionists and orchestra, played twice on the Knoxville Symphony’s Masterworks series at the Tennessee Theatre with Mike Truesdell, conducted by Aram Demirjian.

It is a concerto in the old sense — two soloists out front with a very large amount of equipment, and an orchestra that spends the piece either chasing them or getting out of the way. The two parts are written to interlock closely enough that a listener cannot always tell which player produced which sound, which only works if the two of you have agreed on far more than the notes.
