Applebaum writes music that keeps asking whether the thing you are doing counts as playing. Straitjacket is a solo with an ensemble around it and a set of constraints that make the soloist’s job partly theatrical. Doing it in front of a convention audience, with the composer watching, sharpens the question considerably.
