Unsilent Night

Phil Kline  ·  Knoxville  ·  2012 to 2025

Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night is a piece for a crowd carrying boomboxes through a city in December. Each person plays one of four tracks; the piece is whatever the moving, drifting sum of them turns out to be on that street on that night.

I have directed the Knoxville edition every year since 2012. Thirteen Decembers.

It is the least conventionally virtuosic thing on this list and one of the most durable. Nobody auditions. The instrument is the neighborhood.
